OBSERVATIONS FROM PENGUINS INFORMAL SKATES

Sergei Plotnikov, He’s a player that many eyes will be on in training camp. Keep in mind they’re just informal skates, but Plotnikov has fit the scouting report. He’s a rugged winger and looks bigger than the size he’s listed at. Decent hands in around the net and you see some offensive instincts are there.

The one area that stands out is a slow first couple steps. That’s something of a red flag scouts have for him in transitioning to the NHL, at least in a top-6 role. Once he gets going he’s a good enough skater but it’s those first couple steps that could plague him.

Kevin Porter, I played with Kevin in 2000-2001 with Detroit Honeybaked and the Penguins organization are adding a great guy to their room in Wilkes Barre. Don’t be surprised if he see’s some time in the NHL. The Penguins view him as potentially this years’ version of Andrew Ebbett. Someone who can be serviceable and play a 4th line role. Excellent north-south skater and good two-way instincts.
